SÃO PAULO: INTO THE VOID

This design studio was developed in collaboration with students and professors of BK TU Delf. It examined the relation between São Paulo’s housing crisis and the agenda of urban social movements that reclaim the right to the city. These movements contributed to make São Paulo a laboratory for the development of participatory housing policies since Brazil’s democratization in the mid-1980s.

The studio focused on the constellation of urban voids that are widespread in central parts of this megalopolis, which are the consequence of São Paulo’s expansion by discontinuous allotments, and whose maintenance is based on the city’s failure to regulate real estate speculation.

Participants in the course were thus challenged to investigate design strategies that explore possibilities for the co-existence of diverse income and socio-racial groups, allowing for the development of local economies, as well as social, gender, spatial and environmental practices. To avoid approaches that are merely based on extraction of value from land to the detriment of people’s livelihoods, the course stimulated participants to research patterns of inhabitation, interdependence between home and the city, and negotiations between individual aspirations and collective welfare.

WORKSHOP + SEMINAR

SÃO PAULO: ON THE EDGE

The workshop focused on inhabiting the periphery of the São Paulo metropolitan region along the springs, whose ecosystem of the Atlantic Forest biome, although considerably devastated, provides this megalopolis with water, energy generation as well as other environmental 'services'.
The workshop therefore addressed the relationship between housing and urban inclusion, social and environmental justice, taking into account the actions of social movements claiming the right to the city in São Paulo and the role of urban legislation instruments, such as the so-called Special Zones of Social Interest (ZEIS).
The workshop participants were challenged to develop a "project-manifesto" for a plot of land located within a ZEIS 4 area in Jardim Gaivotas.
To support the development of this project-manifesto, workshop participants developed a spatial and situational analysis of the project site, researching the social, urban and ecological factors that mediate housing patterns and lifestyles; individual aspirations and collective well-being; leisure, sport and recreation and environmental protection, while emphasizing the potential of São Paulo's waterscapes.

WORKSHOP + SEMINAR

SÃO PAULO: REPAIR AND CONSOLIDATE

The studio Global Housing São Paulo: Repair and Consolidate focused on the city of São Paulo to investigate urban realities that resonate with Teresa Caldeira's (2017) concept of peripheral urbanization, and that can be seen as an instance of Gautam Bhan's modes of southern urban practice (2019). It is with this theoretical framework that the studio examined and discussed modes of practice based on the notions of repairing (as opposed to building or upgrading) and consolidating (as opposed to creating single, universal systems of development).

The group participated in a series of activities that included debates and visits to Housing Complex Riachuelo, Casarão Celso Garcia, Pq. Novo Santo Amaro V, Jd. São Francisco, Gleba A Heliópolis and Comuna Urbana Dom Helder Câmara. In addition, visits were organized to Grajaú, which is the focus area of the Dutch group's studio, which later developed a project for the area.

WORKSHOP + SEMINAR

RANDSTAD:REPAIR AND CONSOLIDATE

Within the framework of the studio Global Housing: Repair and Consolidate, and in parallel to it, this workshop focused on the regional urban area known as Randstad, including Amsterdam, Delft, den Haag and Rotterdam to investigate projects in comparison to those studied in São Paulo.

Following that framework and its theoretical references, the studio examined and discussed modes of practice based on the notions of repairing (as opposed to building or upgrading) and consolidating (as opposed to creating single, universal systems of development).

This was carried out through site visits and discussions with local stakeholders, including the following experiences: Doedijnstraat, Schilderswijk, by Alvaro Siza with G&S  in The Hague, Randstad; Haarlemmerplein, by Dick van Gameren in Amsterdam, Randstad; Het Open IJnde, by MOPET & NAT Architecten, in Amsterdam (Ijburg), Randstad; Fenix II, by Mei Architecten, in Rotterdam, Randstad; Waterdijk, by MVRDV, in The Hague (Ypenburg), Randstad; Zaaneiland, by Maccreanor Lavington, in Amsterdam, Randstad.
